What does Invesco Mortgage Capital do?

We invest in Agency residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities and finance those assets through secured funding markets. We actively hedge our portfolio to manage interest rate risk and seek to distribute our interest income, after financing and operating expenses, to our stockholders. As a REIT, we distribute the majority of our income to stockholders, positioning the company primarily as an income vehicle for investors seeking exposure to U.S. Agency guaranteed assets.

A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a company that owns, operates, or finances real estate or real estate-related assets. REITs receive a special tax status under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, and are generally not subject to U.S. federal or state corporate income tax as long as they continue to qualify as a REIT and distribute at least 90% of their taxable income to stockholders annually in the form of dividends. To continue to qualify as a REIT, the company must also satisfy several quarterly asset and annual income tests. REITs provide large and small investors alike an opportunity to invest in income-producing real estate or real estate-related assets without actually buying, managing, or financing real estate themselves. Invesco Mortgage Capital is classified as a Mortgage REIT, in contrast to a Property REIT or Equity REIT, because IVR invests in mortgage-backed securities, and not in physical properties, like Property REITs do. The major risk that Agency MBS focused Mortgage REITs must manage is interest rate risk, since they are not exposed to credit risk, give the explicit or implicit guarantee provided by Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Additionally, the management team adjusts portfolio mortgage exposures to capture the best relative value and adjusts portfolio leverage to take advantage of market opportunities.
